Resources & Surrenders

There will always be more homeless animals than we can accommodate until spay/neuter is a more commonly accepted practice - both locally and nationally.

If you have found a stray, please contact the animal control agency for the county/city in which you found the animal. The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina is unable to accept or hold stray animals.

Surrendering pets adopted through HSEC:

If your animal was adopted from our facility, we will accept the animal back into our care. Please email surrender@hsecarolina.org for further instructions.

Surrendering pets NOT adopted through HSEC:

If you have an adoptable pet that you need to have re-homed, we recommend contacting all rescues/resources in your area prior to considering surrendering. Finding your dog or cat another home instead of surrendering them will be less stressful for your animal, allows you to play a part in uniting them with a new family, and makes additional space available for pets whose lives are at risk.

Rehome by Adopt a Pet is a great resource and also offers information on ways to keep your pet and how to avoid surrendering your pet.

If you are interested in surrendering your pet to the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, you must fill out the surrender form, along with all veterinary records proving your pet is up-to-date on all vaccinations - including rabies - to surrender@hsecarolina.org. We will then review your information and, if we feel your animal is a good match for our program, we will contact you to schedule a behavior and medical evaluation. There is a $75 required surrender fee.

Community Resources

Pet Food Pantry of Eastern North Carolina: The Pet Food Pantry is our community's first dedicated charitable pet food resource. The PFP was established in 2013 to help prevent the abandonment or surrender of animals when their families can no longer afford to feed them.
